I see the roaches
Mixed with the people
I see them scattered in the streets
In the sidewalk they appear in and out of the cracks as if they’re coming up to breathe
I see the birds
mixed with the people
I see them clinging to the wires that energize our devices
They fly and land in parking lots
Pecking at discarded fruit gone to rot
“Can you imagine living like gods?”
Says the university student in debt
And his neighbor who’s a local says, “maybe we already did.”
Purple haze, slap it on like a bandaid
The rather typical light fixture above the dining table suddenly looks rainbow glazed
Nothing to another day
Maui burned and few were saved
it didn’t show up on the T.V.
The news reports a normal day
The army serves and bullets spray
While there’s corruption still in D.C.
Go to work the worried masses
It’s not us they support
Save enough to carve out taxes
To fund the never ending wars
Raise a glass if you live next door
Let me drink to my good neighbors
If we thought we were gods
We’ve done a horrible job
Of manufacturing a savior
